LED scream demonstrating system of all vanadium redox flow battery(VRFB), independently developed by Huamin Zhang’s group (303), has been safely operated more than one year, over 8800h since July 2007. This system consists of KWs battery module, energy management control systems and LED screen (load), the core of which is VRFB system, rate output 2kW. So far, the output performance of the battery system is no significant attenuation.The results suggest that we have made important progress on improving energy storage stability and durability of VRFB. Meanwhile, Zhang’s group has also made significant progress on high-power VRFB system. They have successfully developed the first generation 100kW-class VRFB energy storage system, which consists of ten 10KW VRFB modules and is the largest VRFB system in China, so far. The design, integration and commissioning work of the battery system have been complicated, and it is being optimized and tested now.Preliminary test results show that when the output power of battery system reach to 100kW, the charge and discharge energy conversion efficiency is over 72%, and it can be further improved by optimization. VRFB is an energy storage device, the key components of which contain the battery module, energy management control system, the electrolyte solution and its storage and delivery systems. Compare to others chemical storage technologies (as Secondary batteries, electrochemical capacitors, etc), VRFB has unique advantages in large- scale energy storage, such as high energy conversion efficiency, high electrical storage capacity, independent design of capacity and power , high reliability, low operation and maintenance costs. Particularly, it is provided with operational safety and environmental friendliness, thus become one of preferred choice of large-scale energy storage technology. The main applications of VRFB include: power system, it can provide reserve capacity for power system to improve safety and reliability of the power grid, and can be used to "load leveling" for energy conservation; distributed power generation systems, it can be used as energy storage unit to stable power supply and improve power reliability for distributed power plants, and to achieve the connection of the distributed power generation to bulk power network; renewable energy (such as solar, wind, etc.) power generation, it can regulate renewable energy generation to improve the continuity and stability. In addition, VRFB also can be used as reserve Power, uninterruptible power supply, etc. in some important institutions and departments.
The research work for high power VRFB was funded by National Science and Technology department and Bolong (Dalian) industry investment company. In recent years, via the joint efforts of scientists and technicians of Zhang’s group, lots work for application basic research and project research have been carried out, and have made significant progress in battery attenuation control, development of high-power battery module , design and integration battery systems, the establishment and optimization of system operation mode and operating conditions, and the preparation of key materials, established a number of proprietary technology. In 2007, 10kW-class VRFB energy storage system developed DICP won the first prize of Dalian Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award.
Those results will accelerate the industrialization process of flow battery energy storage and further promote this technology play an important role in the wider application of renewable energy and energy saving. 2008.7.7 |
