The kWh sodium polysulfide /bromine redox flow battery energy storage test prototype, undertook  by the  group of fuel cell materials and technology ( Group 303) , supported by the Innovation Fund of DICP  was completed . The result shows that the battery system performs well with stable output power of 4 kW and energy storage capability of 60 kWh. Large-scale energy storage technologies mainly include pumped hydro energy storage, compressed air energy storage technology for power generation and redox flow battery energy storage technology. The first two techniques more limited by site conditions, but the redox flow battery energy storage technology requires less in this respect. It also has the following characteristics:
1. Power and capacity are independent and easy to operate the power depends on the cell stack, and the battery storage capacity depends on the amount of fluid.
2. No self-discharge, long service life;
3. The depth of discharge can not damage the battery, so its safe.
In recent years, redox flow battery for energy storage was highly valued by people. The United Kingdom and the United States has built more than 120 MWh of sodium sulfide / bromine redox flow battery energy storage system; Japans Kansai Electric Power Company and Sumitomo Corporation have developed a 100 kWh vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system, and won Japan Science and Technology Award in 2001.
The successful development of the kWh sodium polysulfide / bromine redox flow battery test prototype increases our understanding of the cell and has great significance for developing high-power energy storage (electrical) system.
