Mr. LIU Yan, Assistant to the Mayor of Dalian City, first gave a warm welcome speech to the Chinese and American participants of the Forum on behalf of the City Government. Then Prof. LI Can (Member of CAS), Vice-Director of DICP and Director of National Clean Energy Laboratory, addressed the Joint Forum on behalf of DICP. He first introduced the main research accomplishments of DICP in energy storage technology and clean energy utilization. He stressed that with the gradual exhausting of the conventional fossil energy resources like coal, petroleum and natural gas, and along side with the growing of environment protection consciousness around the world, many countries are paying extensive attentions to the utilizing of renewable energies such as solar energy and wind energy. In November 2009, Mr. HU Jintao, President of China, and Mr. Barack Obama, President of USA, jointly announced the startup of the Sino-US partnership in renewable energy, and agreed to strive together for the realization of large-scale utilization of wind energy and solar energy in modern electric grid systems.
Dr. Imre Gyuk, Chief Officer in charge of energy storage projects in the US Department of Energy, also gave a talk in the opening ceremony. He first expressed his thanks to the organizers of the Joint Forum. Then he introduced the active attitude of the US government and enterprises in the development of energy storage technologies, and talked in detail the R&D, application and demo units of various physical and chemical storage technologies in USA, as well as the development programs for energy storage in his country.
Prof. ZHANG Huamin of DICP gave a presentation in the Forum on the R&D status of the “all vanadium liquid flow storage battery” under the collaboration of DICP and the Dalian Rongke Energy Storage Co. Ltd.
The successful convening of this Joint Forum has built up a platform for the in-depth exchange of energy storage technologies and policies between China and USA.
